Yes, to a certain extent.

Having high-quality photos of your products can help your brand stand out and increase sales. Clear, professional images show your customers what they are buying, which can build trust and attract more buyers.

Years ago, I took product photos for an e-commerce store selling musical instruments. My job was to update the website and social media with new products, and I also handled the photography. I once took a series of artistic photos of a black guitar, showcasing its key features. I posted them online, and soon after, someone bought it. This was surprising because I had accidentally priced the guitar too high. Despite the mistake, it sold. This experience taught me that high-quality photos do help products sell.

In today’s social media-driven world, first impressions are everything. If your product photos are eye-catching, they’ll stand out in a sea of similar items. Imagine everyone else is selling the same guitar, but their photos have a simple white background. If yours are more creative—perhaps showcasing the guitar in an artistic setting or with dramatic lighting—it will catch the eye and appear more valuable. This can make the buying decision easier for customers, reducing the extra effort it takes to make a purchase.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when photographing your products:

1. Does your photo accurately represent the product?

Many people have shared stories of receiving items that look different from the photos they saw online. This can happen if the lighting, filters, or color adjustments make the product look different from the real thing. It's tempting to over-edit to make the product look more appealing, but it’s important to keep your photos true to what you're actually selling. Simple, accurate photos are always better than over-styled ones.

2. Focus on the setup, not just editing

When working in video production, my team always makes sure to get the lighting and set-up perfect before filming. Yes, editing software is great, but it's much easier to get things right from the start. Properly lighting your product and setting up the scene will save you time in post-production and help avoid a "fake" look that over-editing can create. Good setup leads to better results with less editing, making your photos feel more real and authentic.

3. Does it resonate with your customers?

Before purchasing, customers often imagine how the product will fit into their lives. To help with this, try taking lifestyle photos that show your product in use. For example, if you’re selling a beauty product, show someone using it in a real setting rather than just a plain product shot against a white background. You might want to take both types of photos: one simple product shot for your website and social media, and another lifestyle shot to connect emotionally with your customers. But remember, make sure the lifestyle photos still represent the product accurately.

Conclusion

High-quality product photos can make your brand stand out because they show you care about presenting your products well. But photos alone aren’t enough—they need to tell a story and connect with your audience emotionally. The goal is to spark interest and leave your customers wanting to know more. Keep it simple, and focus on creating authentic, compelling images that reflect your brand.
